Russian Ambassador: US unlikely to extend arms embargo on Iran

19 May 2020

Attempts by the US administration to extend the arms embargo against Iran are unlikely to succeed, the Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan told an interview to TASS dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russian-Iranian relations.

"The arms embargo ends on October 18, 2020. I think that the clumsy attempts of the Americans to prevent this are unlikely to succeed, " the diplomat said, adding that "the US itself has grossly violated international law, failed to fulfill its own obligations, and now is trying to encourage other states to follow the same path."

According to Dzhagaryan, Russia "does not see any problems with lifting the embargo and continuing cooperation with Iran in the military-technical sphere."

"If the Iranian side submits specific applications, they will be carefully studied in accordance with international standards," he said.
On May 13, a statement was published by the permanent mission of the United States to the United Nations, which states that Washington believes it is necessary to strengthen the UN Security Council's sanctions pressure on Iran.

The document also says that the US intends to seek an extension of the arms embargo against Iran, which expires on October 18.

The Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia, in turn, said that the United States can not demand an extension of the arms embargo against the Islamic Republic, since it is no longer a party to the Iranian nuclear deal. As the diplomat stressed, there is no reason to extend the embargo, and it should expire with the relevant Security Council resolution.
