Russian Ambassador: West strongly politicizes the return of refugees to Syria

12 November 2020

The West strongly politicizes the issue of Syrians returning to their places of residence, and in some countries, they are convinced that the oppression awaits them at home, Russian Ambassador to Syria, Alexander Yefimov told reporters.

He told that refugees who are in other countries undergo psychological procedures. They are being persuaded not to return to Syria because there is a bad future for them or they will face repression.

"We hope that the conference (International Conference on the Return of Syrian Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons - TASS) will give a strong impetus to the process of returning refugees to their homeland. This is a very important issue, a humanitarian one, which, unfortunately, is heavily politicized in the West," Yefimov said.

The ambassador pointed out that many countries, which "shout the fate of refugees the most as if they care about the Syrian people the most" refused to participate in this conference. "In fact, it turns out that they do not want to help this process," the diplomat emphasized.

According to him, the process of refugees' return needs the help of the international community. "We need financing, the help of the international community, which, unfortunately, does not come in the amount it should come in," said Yefimov.

It is necessary,  the Ambassador of the Russian Federation continued, to solve many problems and issues. "Therefore, I think that we will cope with it by joint efforts. Many projects are being prepared now. <...> Russia has helped and will help the Syrian people", he concluded.
