In Rome, consultations were held between Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Ryabkov and US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliot Abrams. According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the main topic of negotiations held on the initiative of the American side was the resolution of the political crisis in Venezuela.
«A frank and substantive exchange of views revealed a number of fundamental differences in assessments of the causes and origins of the current crisis in Venezuela. Nonetheless, Moscow proceeds from the possibility and expediency of a dialogue with the United States on this topic in strict accordance with the UN Charter and on the basis of respect for the fundamental principles of international law», notes the Russian Ministry in particular.
Ryabkov, at the same time, stressed that Russia intends to continue to come out in favor of resolving the situation by the Venezuelans themselves and within the framework of an inclusive political dialogue, without outside interference.
