19 March

US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz announced that he had agreed in a phone conversation with Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov to hold a meeting between expert groups from both countries in Riyadh in the coming days to discuss a partial ceasefire in Ukraine.

“Today, I spoke with my Russian counterpart, Yuri Ushakov, about President [Donald] Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine. We agreed that our technical teams will meet in Riyadh in the coming days to focus on implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire that President Trump secured from Russia,” Waltz wrote on X.

Earlier, he told reporters at the White House that he had not discussed Western military aid to Ukraine during his latest conversation with Ushakov.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump confirmed in a phone call their commitment to continuing efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, including considering proposals from the US leader. According to the Kremlin’s press service, “for this purpose, Russian and American expert groups are being formed.” The Russian president also agreed to Trump’s proposal for both sides of the Ukraine conflict to refrain from striking energy infrastructure targets.
