Work on opening the embassy of Russia in Tripoli is in progress and the candidate for the post of Russian ambassador to Libya is waiting for the Libyan authorities' agreation, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters on Monday.

"The work is in progress, we have an advance team already left for the place. Now our candidate for the post of ambassador has gone through all the procedures and is waiting for the consent of the Libyan authorities. As soon as he receives the agreation, the appointment procedure will be completed, and he will leave for his place of work," Bogdanov said in response to a question from TASS.

Earlier, Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs Murad Hemaima met with a Russian delegation to discuss the measures needed to open a Russian embassy in Tripoli.

On October 2, 2013, the Russian embassy in Tripoli was attacked. The attackers managed to break into the premises of the diplomatic mission and were later driven outside it by Libyan army units. None of the Russians were injured. The Libyan authorities admitted at the time that they could not guarantee the diplomats' safety, after which a decision to evacuate them was made.
