The escalating situation in northern Afghanistan shows that the agreements between the United States and the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) are not yet working. This is the position, according to sources in the Russian delegation, the Russian side expressed on Wednesday at a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Dushanbe.
According to the interlocutors, it was said that "the development of events in the northern regions of Afghanistan, including the mass 'exodus' of Afghans to the territory of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, shows that the arrangement between the US and the Taliban, fixed in the agreement of February 29 of last year in Doha, does not work yet".
The delegation noted that the US is actively probing the possibility of moving its military facilities from Afghanistan to Central Asian countries. According to the sources, the expectations that the withdrawal of foreign contingent would be accompanied by the provision of security in Afghanistan have not come true.
According to the sources, the Russian delegation stated that "Americans are concerned about the fate of Afghan citizens affiliated with them and also about the transfer of their military facilities to Central Asia from Afghanistan" and "are actively probing the possibility of solving these problems". At the same time, the Russian side expressed fears in connection with the risks that bear "the plans of involving Central Asian countries in the inter-Afghan fight" if "the American plans will be implemented at least in some form".
Under these circumstances, the Russian side pointed to the crucial importance of constant consultations among the SCO member states to prevent instability from spreading to the organization.
