Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov attended the inauguration ceremony of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazwani in Nouakchott. The event provided an opportunity to discuss future collaboration, particularly in light of Mauritania's upcoming presidency of the African Union in 2024, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Following the ceremony, Bogdanov held a separate meeting with President Ould Ghazwani. The discussion focused on strengthening the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Mauritania, emphasizing the importance of expanding multifaceted cooperation. The meeting also highlighted the need for closer foreign policy coordination between Moscow and Nouakchott, especially considering Mauritania's role as African Union chair in 2024.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also noted that Bogdanov engaged with several high-level delegates present at the inauguration, including the presidents of Chad and Guinea-Bissau, the head of Libya's presidential council, the defense minister of Mali, the Tunisian foreign minister, a representative of the Palestinian president, and the chairman of the African Union Commission.
In discussions on international issues of mutual interest, particular attention was given to the situations in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahara-Sahel region. The importance of intensified and coordinated efforts to resolve conflicts and crises in accordance with international law and the UN Charter was emphasized.
