Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed over the phone the process of political settlement in the Arab republic.
"There was a detailed discussion of the current situation in Syria with a focus on the tasks of intensifying humanitarian assistance and promoting the process of a political settlement based on respect for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country, as stipulated in the UN Security Council resolutions," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on Friday following the conversation held the day before.
Russia's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the Syrian problem with Pedersen, Smolenskaya Square reported. The dialogue took place "in the context of the task of implementing the UN Security Council resolution 2254".
"Special attention was paid to the promotion of the political process with the accent on activation of the work of the constitutional committee in Geneva," the diplomatic mission noted.
