03 March 2022

Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, and Jaber Hamidavi, head of the Arab League delegation in Moscow, discussed Thursday the situation in Ukraine and preparations for the sixth ministerial meeting of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"There was a detailed exchange of views on topical international and Middle Eastern issues with a focus on the situation in Ukraine as well as prospects for settlement in Libya and Yemen," the ministry pointed out.

Bogdanov and Hamidavi also discussed further strengthening of foreign policy coordination between Russia and the LAS, as well as preparations for the planned sixth ministerial session of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum in 2022.

The meeting was held at Hamidavi's request.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine in response to an appeal for help from the leaders of the Donbas republics. He stressed that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories; the goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian military does not strike cities, but only disables military infrastructure, so the civilian population is not threatened.
