Russian deputy foreign minister discusses return of Syrian refugees with UN high commissioner

Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin discussed during the meeting in Damascus with the UN High commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi the prospects of the return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to places of permanent residence, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement issued on Monday following the meeting held the day before.


"There was a detailed exchange of views on the current situation in and around Syria, the prospects for advancing the process of the return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to places of permanent residence. Particular attention was paid to international assistance measures for the voluntary repatriation of Syrians and their comprehensive support," the document said.


The sides also discussed urgent humanitarian problems in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone and international efforts to resolve them.
