Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, held talks in Algeria with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to discuss the situations in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“During an exchange of views on pressing foreign policy issues, special attention was given to the situations in Syria, Lebanon, Palestinian territories, and the broader region of North Africa and the Sahel-Sahara. The discussions underscored the alignment or convergence of Moscow and Algiers’ approaches, emphasizing the necessity of peaceful resolution of conflicts and crises in the Middle East and Africa. These solutions must adhere to internationally recognized legal norms, inclusive political dialogue, and respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states,” the statement said.
The ministry highlighted the broad range of issues discussed regarding multifaceted Russian-Algerian cooperation. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening traditionally friendly relations, aligned with the Declaration on Enhanced Strategic Partnership signed during President Tebboune's state visit to Russia in June 2023. The talks noted the high level of trust in political dialogue and the effectiveness of cooperation in multilateral settings, including Algeria’s current tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2024-2025).
The meeting also emphasized the vital role of the Russian-Algerian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation in fostering bilateral ties. Its 12th session is scheduled to be held in Algeria in late January 2025.
