Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Highlights Interstate Cooperation in Combating Drugs

15 March

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin emphasized the importance of broad interstate cooperation in the fight against the global drug threat at an event of the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center for Combating Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, and their Precursors (CARICC).

"Countering the global drug threat requires broad interstate cooperation. It is enough to look at the geography of cross-border drug routes to make sure that their interdiction is possible only on the basis of joint efforts," Vershinin stated.

He noted that Russia provides financial assistance to CARICC and actively participates in its work. The diplomat also highlighted the potential of the center to be used more effectively with the support of all participants, including donor support. Vershinin pointed out the need for cooperation with other specialized structures and welcomed the practical cooperation of CARICC with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The diplomat emphasized that the Russian Federation is prepared to provide CARICC with the necessary support to build a society free from drug abuse.

The event took place on the sidelines of the 67th UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna.
