On the sidelines of an international conference in Egypt on Gaza, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin held discussions with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah Safadi, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, and several United Nations representatives.
As detailed by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vershinin participated in the ministerial conference “A Year Since the Humanitarian Catastrophe in Gaza: Urgent Needs, Lasting Solutions”, held under the auspices of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
“During the event, the deputy minister conducted a series of bilateral meetings, including with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, China’s Special Envoy for the Middle East Zhai Jun, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Gaza Reconstruction Sigrid Kaag, and UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory Muhannad Hadi,” the ministry stated.
The forum centered on facilitating safe and unrestricted delivery of urgent aid to those affected in Gaza, emphasizing that this requires an immediate and sustained ceasefire. Discussions also addressed the resumption of a peace process grounded in internationally recognized legal frameworks, aimed at establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state within 1967 borders, including the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In his address, Vershinin outlined Russia's principled stance on resolving the crisis in the Arab-Israeli conflict zone, highlighting the necessity of halting bloodshed, ensuring unhindered humanitarian assistance, and pursuing a long-term solution based on a two-state framework.
“The importance of safeguarding and upholding the fundamental rights of Palestinians, including self-determination and the right of return, was underscored, along with support for the mandates of UN bodies, particularly UNRWA,” the ministry added.
