Russian Deputy Foreign Minister: risks of confrontation in Strait of Hormuz are growing

11 July 2019

Russia is concerned by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz because tensions in the region continue to escalate, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told RIA Novosti.

"The situation is very concerning, and we are convinced that, in fact, the risks of direct confrontation have recently increased so much that it is more difficult to predict the further development," the agency quotes Ryabkov.

International media reported a new incident in the Strait of Hormuz. Five boats, presumably belonging to Iran,  have attempted to impede a British oil tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Royal Navy warship, the frigate HMS Montrose issued "verbal warnings to the Iranian vessels" which then turned away.

Iranian Foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif rejected the claims, saying the claims were being made to create tension in the region.
