Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism by telephone Tuesday with David Kuori, the British Prime Minister's international affairs adviser and deputy national security adviser.

"Regional crises and conflicts before the UN Security Council were discussed at length. Particular attention was paid to the situation in Afghanistan, including counter-terrorism tasks and integrated humanitarian assistance. The importance of coherence among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council was stressed," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Taliban movement (banned in Russia) launched a large-scale operation for establishing control over Afghanistan after the announcement by the US in spring of its intention to withdraw from the country. On August 15, president of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani resigned and left the country, and the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight. US troops left Afghanistan entirely on Tuesday night, ending their 20-year presence in the country.
