Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations reproached the UN for lack of courage on the report on Iran

First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky reproached the leadership of the world organization for not having enough courage on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' report on the situation in Iran.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, the Russian diplomat said Moscow noted "with satisfaction" that the Secretary-General in his report expressed regret over the US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal.

"Equally important is Antonio Guterres' conclusion that these actions by the US side could have a negative impact on the implementation of Resolution 2231 by other parties," Polyansky added.

That said, he said, the report was not fully balanced because one side cannot be urged to return to full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreements and the other cannot.

"We regret that the UN leadership again lacked the courage to clearly formulate a call for the US to return to the full and unconditional compliance with Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA, as well as to cancel all steps the US side has taken in violation of them," Polyansky added.

According to him, this is the second time Moscow has been struck by the "cynical language of the report" by the Secretary-General on the killing of Iranian figures.

"Not a word of condemnation of these acts, no mention of their potential negative consequences in the document. Neither is there any regret for the death of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, as in the case of Qassem Suleimani. It's hard to call it other than cowardice," the Deputy Representative stressed.
