The Russian Embassy in Nigeria confirmed that the military coup in Niger has not had any adverse impact on the well-being of Russians residing in Nigeria, Yuri Paramonov, press attaché of the Russian Embassy in Nigeria, told TASS on Tuesday.
Firstly, he highlighted that the geographical separation between the two countries has acted as a safeguard, shielding Russian expatriates from the potential repercussions of the coup in Niger. Additionally, Paramonov emphasized that the aftermath of the coup has not caused any disruptions to the overall social fabric or daily life in Nigeria.
"Our fellow citizens mostly reside along the southern coast of Nigeria, quite distant from the Niger border, so they remain unaffected by the ongoing events. Although a small number of compatriots do live in the northern states, we've been in touch with them and they're faring well. The internal social situation and the economy of Nigeria itself remain unaffected," stated the diplomat.
The Russian embassy underscored the absence of any widespread unrest throughout the entire country. "Even in the northern states, where the people speak Hausa, the same language as the majority of Niger's population, the situation remains stable and peaceful," affirmed a representative from the diplomatic mission.
Simultaneously, the diplomat highlighted that the Nigerian authorities are actively engaged in addressing the Niger issue. "They position themselves as a regional powerhouse and naturally consider it their duty to uphold security and stability in the region. Nigeria plays a pivotal role in advocating for the notion of deploying a limited force," noted Paramonov.
