Russian Federation Council Expresses Shock Over Escalating Crisis in the Middle East

09 November 2023

The escalating crisis in the Gaza Strip demands an immediate halt to the ongoing bloodshed, and Russia expresses deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the region. These sentiments were conveyed by Grigory Karasin, the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, during a meeting with the Israeli Ambassador to Russia, Alexander Ben Zvi.

"Russia is deeply alarmed by the unfolding crisis in the Middle East. The situation in Gaza is continually worsening, resulting in loss of lives. It is imperative to urgently halt the bloodshed," expressed the senator.

He mentioned that the senators received a letter from the Speaker of the Tanzanian Parliament, Tulia Axon, who was elected Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the recent assembly held in Angola. Karasin noted that the letter emphasizes the urgent need to immediately cease the killings.

"It is time to save lives. This is the opinion, probably the consensus among the majority of thoughtful individuals in the international community," expressed the head of the FC committee.

"We understand that everything began not by chance; there was a terrorist attack, and people were killed. Nevertheless, everything has escalated too far," remarked Karasin.

The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply after Palestinian Hamas fighters infiltrated from the Gaza Strip into Israel on October 7. Hamas claims the attack is in response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and launched retaliatory strikes against Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. Clashes are also occurring in the West Bank. On October 27, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari announced the expansion of the ground military operation in the Gaza Strip.
