Russian Foreign Minister: the "deal of the century" is unlikely to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

17 February 2020

Washington's proposed plan for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, known as the "deal of the century", is unlikely to help the situation, since the authors of the plan have essentially ignored the internationally recognized approach to the problem,
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told in an interview for Stampa newspaper.

"The United States, in their own style, offered to solve one of the most long-standing conflicts of our time in one fell swoop. Washington essentially ignored the universally recognized international legal basis of the Middle East settlement, comprising the Security Council resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative," said, in particular, the Minister.

This approach, according to Lavrov, is unlikely to help correct the situation.

"This is also indicated by the fact that the so - called "deal of the century" is categorically rejected by the Palestinians," the Russian Foreign Minister said.

US President Donald Trump announced the details of the "deal of the century" on January 28. According to the document, Jerusalem is recognized as the capital of Israel, and Palestine becomes an independent but demilitarized state, effectively deprived of control over its borders.

As the future capital of Palestine, the plan proposes the village of Abu Dis in the Eastern suburbs of Jerusalem, located behind a security fence.

Palestine categorically rejected the US plan. Statements about the document's unacceptability were made by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League  and the European Union.
