Russia supports the necessity of the earliest possible conditions for restarting direct Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue. This was stated in a Russian Foreign Ministry statement issued on Thursday following a teleconference of the special representatives of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators (Russia, the US, the EU, and the UN).

"The Russian side stressed the need for the earliest formation of favorable conditions for restarting direct Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue as a key prerequisite for preventing a relapse into armed escalation of the crisis. "It was noted that the convening of a meeting of the Quartet at the ministerial level, in particular, on the margins of the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly in September this year," said the diplomatic mission.

As noted in the Foreign Ministry, the special envoys were unanimous about the need for urgent reconstruction of civilian infrastructure and recovery of the socio-economic situation both in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. "It was stressed that the realization of this task would be a significant stabilizing factor for the situation in the region. In this regard, the efforts made through the UN and the Egyptian leadership were positively assessed," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

Russia was represented at the teleconference by Vladimir Safronkov, the Russian Foreign Minister's Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process; Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East; Heidi Amr, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, USA; and Sven Koopmans, Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, EU.
