Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the US claim of Victory over Nazism

The White House's claims of Victory over Nazism are made with the intention of disavowing the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, made at the end of April on the occasion of the anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe of Soviet and American troops.

This opinion was expressed by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview to "Evening with Vladimir Solovyov" on "Russia-1" TV channel.

"This was all done for two reasons. First, it is, of course, a desire to disavow the effect of the joint statement of the Russian President and the US President, which was dedicated to the meeting on the Elbe. And this tweet, as we understand it, was supposed to neutralize this effect. It just didn't unite. The purpose of this tweet, this message was not to unite, but to separate the countries, to isolate only two of the winners, to completely forget that people, soldiers, civilians, home front workers - millions of people are behind the victory," the diplomat said.

The second reason for this behavior of the American side, the official representative of the Foreign Ministry considers attempts to conduct information warfare, which are regularly undertaken in order to rewrite history.

"We will have a serious conversation with the American side on all these issues. The appropriate form will be selected, " Zakharova stressed.

"Such tweets are not only rewriting world history, the history of WWII, but they are also rewriting the history of the United States itself ", she concluded.

Earlier, the White House published in social networks a video of US President Donald Trump laying a wreath at the World War II Memorial, accompanied by the text: "On May 8, 1945, the United States and Great Britain won a victory over Nazism. The American spirit will always win."

On April 25 Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump adopted a joint statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe. The document stressed that this meeting was "a harbinger of the decisive defeat of the Nazi regime" and was the culmination of the" colossal efforts of many countries and peoples " who came together in the framework of the United Nations Declaration of 1942.

The leaders of the two countries called the "Spirit of Elba" an example of how " our countries can put aside contradictions, build trust and cooperate in the name of a common goal."
