Russia strongly condemns the recent series of large-scale terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and offers its condolences to the people of the republic in connection with the more than 80 victims of the school attack in Kabul. This was said in a commentary by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova distributed on Tuesday.
"We strongly condemn the series of large-scale terrorist attacks in Afghanistan in recent days, including the May 8 attack on a girls' school in Kabul, which killed more than 80 people and injured over 150. It is terrifying that the main victims of those attacks were children. We view such actions as inhumane and unjustifiable. We express our condolences to the people of Afghanistan and to the families and friends of the victims," the document says.
Zakharova drew attention to the increase in military activity in Afghanistan, including on the part of the authorities, who "regularly report about dozens of killed armed opposition fighters." "We call on Kabul and the Taliban (banned in Russia - TASS) to put an early end to the violence, which hinders the achievement of national reconciliation and creates fertile ground for the activity of ISIS (former name of the extremist group Islamic State banned in Russia - TASS) and other terrorist groups," the Russian diplomatic official stressed.
The Afghan TV channel Ariana News reported on Monday, quoting the country's Second Vice President, that at least 85 people were killed and 150 were wounded in last Saturday's school bombings in Kabul. According to him, there were three consecutive explosions in front of a public school for girls. The first was a car bomb that exploded near the school. Then two improvised explosive devices detonated.
Afghan leader Ashraf Ghani called the incident an act of terrorism and blamed it on the radical Taliban movement. Meanwhile, 1TV reported that the Taliban condemned the attack.
