Russia welcomes efforts of the Arab League on the Middle East settlement and intends to continue cooperation with the organization on this issue. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said this when commenting on the results of the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers held in Cairo on February 8.

"We welcome the commitment made by the participants of the meeting in its final statement to a comprehensive and just resolution of the Palestinian problem on the universally recognized international legal basis, including the relevant resolutions of the SC (Security Council -TASS) and the UNGA, as well as the Arab Peace Initiative. We believe that the agreements reached at the meeting of the Arab League Ministerial Council are in line with collective efforts to contribute to the settlement of this long-standing conflict on the basis of the two-state principle. "We note that the document confirms the important role of the 'quartet' of international mediators as a mechanism to accompany the peace process," Zakharova said in a comment posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry website on Wednesday.

"For its part, Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the quartet, confirms its principled readiness to continue constructive interaction both with Arab partners and with the immediate parties to the conflict in order to restart direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations as soon as possible to resolve fundamental final status issues," she pointed out.

The Russian Federation assumes that this will help create favorable conditions for the overall improvement of the situation in the entire area of the Middle East and North Africa, the diplomat concluded.
