Russia welcomes the decision of Libya's Presidential Council to launch a comprehensive national reconciliation project, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"We welcome this timely decision of the Libyan Presidential Council. We expect that the release of the son and closest associates of Muammar Gaddafi, as well as the reburial of the remains of the former leader of the country, will help Libyans overcome the burden of mutual grievances and acute contradictions accumulated over many years of bloody internal conflict, will be an important step towards a Libyan-wide reconciliation, the restoration of long-awaited peace and stability in this traditionally friendly state," the diplomatic mission noted.
Earlier it became known about the release from jail of the younger son of ex-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi Saadi, who left Libya and is now in Turkey. The former head of Gaddafi's internal security service, General Mansour Daou, who was captured with the colonel in Sirte in 2011, and Major General Naji Harira, an associate and tribesman of Gaddafi, were released from detention in Misrata. In addition, along with other political prisoners who have already served their full sentences, or were imprisoned without a conviction, or were acquitted, former Gaddafi's personal secretary Ahmed Ramadan was released.
Also, according to Libyan sources, an agreement has been reached between prominent representatives of the city of Misrata and the al-Gaddafa and al-Mujabar tribal elders to hand over the remains of Muammar Gaddafi, his son Muatassim, and Abu Bakr Younis Jaber, an associate of the Libyan leader who headed the Ministry of Defense under him.
