Russian Foreign Ministry informs that meeting in Astana format will be held before the end of June

An international meeting on Syria in the Astana format could take place in Nur-Sultan by the end of June, Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, told reporters on the sidelines of the SPIEF on Thursday.


"'We have an idea to hold another meeting in the Astana format sometime before the end of June,'' the deputy minister said.


Bogdanov also said that next week the Russian side would hold contacts with Iranian and Turkish partners on the issue.


According to Bogdanov, Moscow expects a new meeting of the drafting commission of the Syrian Constitutional Committee to be held in the near future.


"We hope that somehow the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria Geir Pedersen will decide, because there was an idea to hold a meeting before the elections in Syria," the diplomat pointed out. - "We hope that the meeting of the drafting committee will take place in the near future".


The previous session of the small group of the Syrian Constitutional Committee was held in January of this year in Geneva.
