Russian Foreign Ministry: the Persian Gulf may be plunged into a new conflict

20 June 2019

Russia fears that the Gulf region may be plunged into a new conflict. Therefore efforts to stabilize the situation must be done. Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Ryabkov told about it in an interview.

“While there is still time to stop, think again, to prevent further slide into uncontrolled confrontation. Unfortunately, these our appeals do not meet understanding in the United States, they do not listen to us. But, I think, the overwhelming majority of international community shares this approach and proceeds from the fact that it has no alternative. Otherwise, the region may be thrown into a new conflict, which is completely unacceptable, given the severity of the consequences of such a development”, - said a high-ranking diplomat.

Earlier this week the United States announced the dispatch of additional forces to the Middle East in response to the “threat from Iran”.

In the Russian Foreign Ministry, Washington’s plans to build up a group in the Middle East were called provocative and aimed at provoking a war.
