Russian Foreign Ministry Warns of Potential Severance in US-Russia Relations, Blaming Washington's Actions

16 November 2023

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement marking the 90th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States, expressed concern that Russian-American relations are at risk of being severed at any moment, attributing this risk to Washington's actions rather than Moscow's choice.

"Against the backdrop of tectonic geopolitical shifts that are changing the balance of power on the world stage, Washington is obsessively betting on the global containment of Moscow and Beijing, and ultimately the entire world majority that disagrees with the rule-based world order imposed by the West," stated the diplomatic department.

"This is the root cause of the deepest crisis that Russian-American relations are now experiencing. Through the fault of Washington, which has adopted virulent Russophobia, they have thinned to the limit and risk being torn apart at any moment. This is not Russia's choice, but the irresponsible steps of the United States, spinning the flywheel of escalation, including the doctrinal task to inflict a 'strategic defeat' on Moscow, may lead to catastrophic consequences," emphasized the Russian Foreign Ministry.

As noted by the Russian Foreign Ministry, after 1933, relations between the two countries experienced ups and downs, adhering to the logic of the Cold War and teetering on the brink of nuclear conflict. However, they did not cross the "fatal point of no return." The statement highlighted, "US statesmen of that era had the good sense to stop and start negotiating peaceful coexistence and arms control with the USSR. Unfortunately, this pragmatic perception of reality was not typical of the generation of the American political elite that took the reins of power in the 1990s and 2000s, for whom the illusory belief in the 'end of history' and the 'golden age of US hegemony' was and remains the basic worldview. Not to mention the inability of current politicians and the expert community abroad to adequately assess the processes in Russia after 1991."

At the same time, the ministry emphasized that political circles in the United States exhibit a "futile and absurd focus on regime change and the organization of internal Russian turmoil, in which significant funds are invested."

"The anniversary today serves as a reminder of the positive historical interactions between our countries, built on principles of respect and mutual consideration of interests. These foundational principles, evident in the 1933 agreement restoring diplomatic relations, continue to be relevant in the current, exceptionally challenging situation," concluded the Russian Foreign Ministry.
