Russian MFA: African Countries' Debts to Russia Can Be Converted into Investments or Projects

12 September 2023

The debts owed by African countries to Moscow could potentially be transformed into investments or allocated for specific development projects, Oleg Ozerov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry and Head of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, told TASS.

When asked about the possibility of Russia writing off the outstanding debts owed by African countries, the diplomat highlighted that such matters are under discussion. He explained that these cases are considered individually as needed, and in some instances, these debts can be transformed into investments or directed towards development projects. Ozerov emphasized that this approach is a global practice, not exclusive to Russia.

In a previous interview with TASS in July, Ozerov had mentioned that approximately 90% of the issues related to African countries' debts to Russia had been resolved.
