Russian MFA announces beginning of work on roadmap for Syrian-Turkish normalization

18 May 2023

Practical work on the roadmap for normalizing Syrian-Turkish relations has already begun. Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters on the sidelines of the "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum" forum on Thursday.

"Of course. We are working on it," he said, responding to a relevant question by TASS.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that a special committee would start preparing the roadmap for normalizing relations between Turkey and Syria in the near future. According to him, the work will be conducted at the level of deputy foreign and defense ministers and representatives of special services.

On the normalization process

The process of normalization of the relations between Ankara and Damascus started on December 28, 2022, in Moscow, when the consultations of the leaders of Russian, Syrian and Turkish military departments were held. At the meeting, an agreement was reached to establish a joint trilateral commission. These consultations were to have been followed by a meeting at the level of foreign ministers, the agenda of which would have included talks between Turkish and Syrian Presidents Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad. Later, it was reported that Iran would participate in the consultations at the level of foreign ministers.

Erdogan told reporters last December 15 that he had proposed to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to hold a trilateral meeting with the Syrian leader. This summit, he said, should be preceded by talks at the level of representatives of special services, defense and foreign ministers.
