Russian MFA: another meeting on Syria in Astana format to be held before year-end

04 October 2022

The next international meeting on Syria in the Astana format is planned before the end of the year, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, told TASS on Tuesday.

"Yes, it is planned [by the end of the year]. Soon, I think, we will determine this together with our colleagues - the Syrian participants, the guarantor countries. Plus, by tradition, a format has already been formed with the participation of observer countries represented by Syria's neighboring states (Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq) as well as UN representatives," he said, responding to a related question.

Bogdanov stressed that these meetings are held regularly and are very useful. "They contribute decisively <...> to the eradication of terrorists on the territory of Syria," he added.

The previous international meeting on Syria in the Astana format was held June 15-16, 2022, in Nur-Sultan.
