Russian MFA calls new Israeli strikes against Syria unacceptable

02 September 2022

Moscow considers the ongoing Israeli strikes on Syrian territory unacceptable, which could lead to a large-scale armed escalation, a commentary by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reads.

"We believe that such irresponsible actions of the Israeli side are absolutely unacceptable. We strongly condemn them," Zakharova stressed.

According to the diplomat, the Israeli strikes are a gross violation of Syrian sovereignty and the basic norms of international law. "We are convinced that such a vicious practice in no way contributes to reducing the security risks for Israel itself. On the contrary, destabilizing acts of force can provoke retaliation and lead to a large-scale armed escalation. We urge the Israeli side to stop armed provocations against neighboring Syria and refrain from any steps that could have dangerous consequences for the entire region," the commentary reads.

On August 31, the Israeli armed forces launched a missile attack on the international airport located on the outskirts of Aleppo in Syria. On the same day, Syrian air defense forces repulsed an Israeli attack in the skies over Damascus province, shooting down several missiles. It was reported that the shelling caused material damage, with no casualties.

Major General Oleg Yegorov, Deputy Head of Russian Center for the reconciliation of the warring parties in the Syrian Arab Republic said at a briefing on Thursday that on Wednesday the Israeli airplanes hit the objects at the Syrian airfields Nayrab (Aleppo) and Duwali (Damascus) and injured five people, destroyed an antenna post of the Syrian S-125 and two warehouses with military and technical equipment
