Russian MFA commented on presidential election in Algeria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia published a comment on presidential election in Algeria held on December 12.


"We consider the holding of this important domestic political event a significant step towards ensuring the progressive development of friendly Algeria. We hope that with the election of the new leader of the Algerian state the multifaceted relations between Russia and Algeria will continue to improve and expand," reads the message of the Ministry.


According to the data published by the country’s National Electoral Commission, independent candidate and former Prime Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune has won the election with 58.15 percent of the vote.


Algeria is the largest country in North Africa, a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.


99% of the country's population is Muslims, another 1% - representatives of other faiths, including Christianity and Judaism.
