Russian MFA commented on the EU's decision to extend sanctions against Syria

04 June 2020

Moscow is disappointed that EU countries followed the US in extending unilateral sanctions against Syria at the end of May, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

Updated EU sanctions against Syria will be in effect until June 1, 2021.

"It is disappointing that the European Union at the end of May, following the US, decided to extend unilateral sanctions against Syria," Zakharova said at a briefing.

According to her, Moscow has repeatedly pointed out that such restrictions "not only cripple the Syrian economy, but also prevent the purchase of vital medicines, medical equipment, and humanitarian goods."

At the end of June, the European Union intends to hold another conference on Syria without the participation of the government of the Arab Republic. The conference will discuss humanitarian assistance and political settlement in Syria.
