Russian MFA comments on Netanyahu's statement on the annexation of the Jordan valley

12 September 2019

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a comment on the statement made by Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu regarding his intention to extend Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley.

"We share concerns over these Israeli plans, the implementation of which can lead to a dramatic escalation of tensions in the region and undermine hopes for a long-awaited peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors", -  reads the message.

The Ministry also confirmed Russia's unchanged position on the need for a comprehensive political settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution to be implemented within the 1967 borders.

"The only reliable way to settle all the existing differences lies through direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians within the framework of international law, including the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Madrid Principles and the Arab Peace Initiative", - the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.
