UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's decision to create a special commission to investigate the incidents in Idlib is provocative, states the comment of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"We know for sure that this provocative idea was actively promoted by countries hostile to the legitimate authorities of the SAR and to our efforts to eradicate the terrorist threat in this country and ensure its territorial integrity and sovereignty. We have repeatedly emphasized that the Syrian military, with the support of the Russian aerospace forces, is carrying out strictly retaliatory and limited actions to neutralize terrorists and destroy their facilities. Attempts to cast a shadow on these efforts, to discredit Damascus, then will be undoubtedly used to create new obstacles to a political settlement," the report said, in particular.
The diplomatic department also expressed doubts about the ability of the UN to build the work of the "commission of inquiry".
"Will it be done remotely, considering that Idlib de-escalation zone, in fact, is primarily controlled by terrorists? Or will they rely on some "credible" sources like the notorious "White helmets", who feel themselves at ease in the territories controlled by the jihadists and have repeatedly been convicted by both the Syrian authorities and the Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in the distribution of staged and fake stories to provoke and escalate anti-Damascus sentiments?" - the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
