Russian MFA: Criticism of Russian peacekeepers in the context of the Lachin corridor is unacceptable

29 December 2022

Criticism of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the context of the situation in the Lachin corridor is unacceptable, Moscow is working to improve the situation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Thursday.

"As for the criticism of Russia, the Russian peacekeeping contingent, in this situation I think it is unacceptable. We have repeatedly said that Russian peacekeepers are doing everything possible to resolve the situation on the ground. Public attacks do not help; there have been situations even worse than this. We are working to improve [the situation]," the diplomat said.

Earlier on Thursday, during a cabinet meeting, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that "if the Russian Federation is unable to ensure stability and security in Nagorno-Karabakh for objective or subjective reasons, it should initiate a discussion at the UN Security Council on giving Russian peacekeeping forces in Nagorno-Karabakh a UN Security Council mandate or sending additional multinational peacekeeping forces to Nagorno-Karabakh."

Commenting on the statement at the request of the media, Zakharova pointed out: "Without a peacekeeping contingent, will anyone be able to say responsibly what would be better? I think the answer is obvious. So, you can say as much as you like that the situation needs to be improved and so on, and I repeat that everyone is dealing with this situation. But to say and state such things is simply not to understand the realities of the world, it seems to me so."
