Russian MFA: G20 Summit in New Delhi Includes Plans to Admit African Union into Membership

08 September 2023

The members of the Group of Twenty (G20) at the summit in New Delhi intend to admit the African Union as a member, as indicated in a paragraph included in the draft declaration of the leaders. This information was conveyed in the message from the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the upcoming participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the G20 summit.

"Special attention is being given to the initiative of including the African Union as a full participant in the G20. Russia has been one of the early supporters of this request from our African partners. The formal inclusion of this regional association as a member of the G20 is planned for the summit in New Delhi, and this provision is included in the draft declaration of the leaders," emphasized the diplomatic department.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is confident that in collaboration with the African Union, Russia can make a substantial contribution to advancing the democratization of international financial and trade institutions, provide further momentum for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and work towards bridging disparities and gaps in industrial and scientific-technical domains. The ministry also highlighted that the outcomes of the recent second summit and economic and humanitarian forum, Russia-Africa (held on July 27-28) in St. Petersburg, will serve as a strong foundation for such comprehensive cooperation.
