04 October 2022

Iranian authorities are assisting in ensuring the security of Russian diplomatic representations in the country amid unrest, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister, told reporters on Tuesday.

According to him, Moscow is monitoring the situation in Iran. "Yes, of course," the deputy minister said, answering a related question from TASS. "The local authorities are providing maximum assistance to ensure the security of our diplomatic missions," Bogdanov stressed.

"I think the security is ensured, but we should always be vigilant. The security of our missions and employees is a priority for the foreign ministry," he added.

In recent days, there have been riots in various Iranian cities following the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. According to the official version, this Kurdish girl was detained by the police for not wearing her headscarf properly. During the interrogation, she had a heart attack, from which she died. On social media, however, it was reported that Amini was beaten by the police.

Rioters attacked police and members of the Basij militia, desecrated the Quran, set fire to mosques and government buildings, attacked women wearing hijab, and set fire to ambulances and gas stations. In various cities of Iran, participants and organizers of the unrest are being arrested and cold weapons and firearms are being seized from them.
