Moscow expects the Taliban (banned in Russia) to fulfill its promises to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan, although not everything is going smoothly, Russian deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko said at the opening of the conference, "Russia and Uzbekistan facing development and security challenges at a new historical stage of interaction".
"We expect the Taliban to fulfill the promises that were made in a number of their statements. Not everything is going smoothly, but we nevertheless hope that we will be able to achieve stabilization in this country by joint efforts," he said.
The diplomat said the drastic collapse of the situation in Afghanistan increased extremist risks for Russia and the Central Asian countries. Stabilization of the situation in Afghanistan will allow Russia to build relations with Kabul, he said.
The conference, which takes place on Monday in the Uzbek capital, was organized by the Institute for strategic and interregional studies under the president of Uzbekistan and the Valdai international discussion club.
