Russian MFA: Moscow maintains contacts with the US on Libya

06 July 2020

Moscow maintains contacts with all countries that can have an impact on the settlement of the situation in Libya through the UN, and there is interaction in a multilateral format, including with the United States,  Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said.

"We maintain contacts with all parties and, first of all, we maintain contacts within the UN. This issue is being discussed in the UN, it is on the agenda, so it is natural that in such a multilateral context, we maintain contacts with all those who can play a role," Vershinin said, answering the question whether Moscow maintains contacts with the US on Libya.

The situation on the ground in Libya, meanwhile, remains difficult, according to a senior diplomat.

"The situation on the ground in Libya is very complex and complicated. What we are doing is focusing our efforts on maintaining such contacts with all the Libyan parties, and you know them, encouraging them to reach mutually acceptable solutions. All this is done under the auspices of the UN, " Vershinin said.

"We also believe that it is necessary to improve the effectiveness of the UN mission. As you know, while there is no head of this mission, the Deputy head is acting temporarily. We believe that the sooner this mission on Libya is fully operational, the better it will be," he added.
