Russian MFA pointed to the double standards of the United States amid mass protests

08 June 2020

Mass protests in the US vividly illustrate the double standards promoted by the US administration, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The Ministry stressed that Washington for decades has been telling other states how to behave in the event of unrest, in fact, fueling internal conflicts.

As an example, the Department called the "color revolutions", "Arab spring" and the coup in Ukraine.

"According to American methods, revolutions were made, legitimate governments were overthrown. How absurd these demands look now, against the background of the current internal American situation. The national guard is attempting to suppress the rallies by force, using riot gear and tear gas. Armored vehicles were used. There are dead and injured, more than nine thousand people were detained. The US President has threatened to use the right to send Federal troops to cities covered by protests, " the Department's Facebook post reads.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that this is not the first time this has happened in the US: the national guard similarly suppressed demonstrations in Los Angeles in 1992.

In addition, it cited a large number of quotes from American officials condemning the actions of the authorities of certain states against the background of the protests.

"Perhaps, in such a situation, the best thing that Washington can do is to remember their own advice on human rights and finally apply it in practice in their own country, entering into peaceful and civilized dialogue with the protesters."

Protests in the US

A wave of riots and protests swept through many American cities over the death of an African-American man, George Floyd, who was detained by police. The video at the Internet shows that law enforcement officers handcuffed the man and threw him to the ground, while one of them pressed his knee on the neck of the detainee.

Floyd says several times that he cannot breathe, and then goes quiet. He died in intensive care. After the incident, the police involved were fired, one was charged with murder, and three others were charged with accessory to murder.
