Russia supports calls for a humanitarian truce in Libya in connection with the onset of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, This is stated in the message of the Russian Foreign Ministry, published following a telephone conversation between Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of Libya, based in the country’s east, Abdul Hadi Al-Hweij.

The Russian party confirmed its principled stance in favour of the solution of current issues on the Libyan agenda by Libyans themselves through an inclusive dialogue with the assistance of the UN in accordance with the decisions of the Berlin summit on Libya and UN Security Council Resolution 2510, including its counter-terrorism provisions.  The Russian party also supported the calls voiced in Libya for a humanitarian ceasefire in view of the upcoming sacred Muslim month of Ramadan.

Yesteday, the Libyan National Army (LNA) of Marshal Khalifa Haftar announced the cessation of all hostilities in the country in connection with the  holy month of Ramadan.

On April 27, the LNA, which has been conducting an offensive on Tripoli for more than a year, has announced the assumption of state control. At the same time, Haftar invalidated the Skhirat Agreement, which provided for the creation of authorities, in particular the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Presidential Council (acting as head of state).
