Russian MFA: Russia's initiatives will help achieve de-escalation in the Persian Gulf region

Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met Thursday with the Omani leadership during a working visit, the parties noted the relevance of Moscow's proposals on the creation of a collective security system in the Persian Gulf zone to achieve de-escalation in the region.

 

"The relevance of updated Russian conceptual proposals on the creation of a collective security system in the Persian Gulf zone aimed at de-escalating tensions and strengthening confidence-building measures among all states in this strategically important region was noted," the Russian diplomatic office said in a statement released Friday.

 

Bogdanov held talks with the head of the Omani foreign ministry and his deputy, and met with the minister of agriculture, fisheries and water resources and the minister of transport, communications and information technology. According to the Russian foreign ministry, the sides reviewed a wide range of issues of further strengthening Russia-Oman relations, including the expansion of trade, economic and investment cooperation and the activation of cultural, humanitarian and social and religious ties.

 

"Considerable attention was paid to checking notes on key aspects of the Middle East agenda with a focus on the situation in Yemen, Syria, and the prospects for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. They stressed the importance of consolidating efforts to find mutually acceptable solutions to the acute crises in the Middle East and North Africa exclusively by peaceful political and diplomatic means based on the legitimate interests of all parties involved and the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter," the Russian foreign ministry said.
