Russian MFA: the threat of destabilization in Iraq still exists

23 September 2019

Despite the elimination of greater part of Islamic State international terrorist group (outlawed in Russia) in Iraq, the threat of destabilization of the situation still exists, the Head of Department for New Challenges and Threats of Russian MFA Vladimir Tarabrin said in an interview to RIA Novosti.

"In Iraq, despite the completion of the military campaign against the Islamic State, the threat of further destabilization of the situation still exists. The not destroyed ISIS underground started a subversive war, focusing on the incitement of the Sunni-Shiite conflict," the diplomat said.

In this regard, according to Tarabrin, coordination of anti-terrorist actions within the framework of the Baghdad information center with the participation of the military from Iraq, Iran, Russia and Syria, as well as cooperation between Baghdad and Damascus to destroy the remnants of terrorist groups on the Syrian-Iraqi border, is becoming increasingly important.

In 2015, the military departments of the Russian Federation, Syria, Iran and Iraq established the Baghdad coordination Centre, whose main functions are the collection, processing, compilation and analysis of current data about the situation in the Middle East in the context of counter-terrorism.
