Russian military personnel planted 75 orange and mandarin trees in Syria in memory of the veterans of the Great Patriotic war. It was held at the Khmeimim Air Base.

Many of the military personnel now in Syria, as RIA Novosti writes, are descendants of veterans who won the war.

"I am glad that I also serve the Fatherland. I believe that any man should protect the Motherland and in any situation should stand guard over it, " Yevgeny Tolmachev, the grandson of the hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Sotnikov, told the Agency.

He admitted that it was his grandfather's exploits that were decisive in choosing a military career. Mikhail Sotnikov died when he stormed Berlin, he was 27 years old. It was blown up on the Spree river.

"Every time the Victory Day song sounds, I get goosebumps. Some memories come back. I don't know how it was with them. My whole family is military: my grandfathers, my father, and I followed their footsteps. My son, who is growing up, answers the question of who you will be: I will be military, like dad, "Senior Lieutenant Timur Aglyamov, whose two grandfathers – a sniper and a scout - were wounded in the war, shares his emotions.

Junior Sergeant Nikita Vysokov is also proud of his great-grandfather. His relative Fedor Koptilov died in 1945 in East Prussia, and he himself in this battle, thanks his skills with a grenade and a rifle, destroyed four German soldiers.

«I'm proud. As well as all other participants of the Great Patriotic war. The campaign is about the memory of veterans. The most important thing is to remember how the years of the Great Patriotic war passed. I will tell my children the history of the Great Patriotic war, I will supplement it with a story about my great - grandfather," Vysokov said.

The "Garden of memory" campaign started on March 18 and has already covered more than 70 regions of Russia. Its goal is to plant 27 million trees in memory of the 27 million who died during the Great Patriotic war. Abroad, the campaign was supported in Abkhazia, Tajikistan, Armenia, Latvia, Lebanon, Nepal, Greece, Cyprus, Morocco and Peru. More than 14 million trees have already been planted.

In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, many Russians arrange "Gardens of memory" in their dachas. Planted trees are photographed and sent to a website dedicated to the campaign.
