Russian Muslim Leaders Unite, Issue Appeals to President Putin and Fellow Believers Worldwide

28 August 2023

Muftis and leaders of centralized Muslim religious bodies in Russia have issued appeals to Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as Muslim leaders in various nations. These documents are designed to safeguard traditional spiritual and moral principles, as highlighted by Mufti Shafiq Pshikhachev, the general representative of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordination Center in Moscow and the chairman of the International Islamic Mission, in a statement to TASS.

"Today, we have issued an appeal to the President of Russia. The core essence of this appeal centers on our endorsement of the President, our gratitude for the decree safeguarding traditional spiritual and moral principles, and our commitment to contribute to the implementation of this decree. Within our appeal, we convey our backing for the President's efforts in the context of the specific military operation. This endorsement is reiterated in our message to the global Muslim community," he stated following the All-Russian scientific-practical conference titled "Modern Challenges to Traditional Values."

Pshikhachev clarified that in their second appeal to fellow believers from other nations, leaders of Muslim organizations within the Russian Federation underscore the actions taken by the "collective West" towards Muslim nations such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, and numerous African countries.

"We must consolidate our endeavors, joining together to secure a future for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. This appeal will be forwarded to both the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation," the mufti specified.

According to him, the press conference resolution also included the proposal to incorporate the teaching of the presidential decree on traditional values into Muslim educational institutions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin endorsed a decree outlining the foundation of the state policy concerning the preservation and fortification of traditional Russian spiritual and moral principles. This encompassed patriotism, devotion to the homeland, and moral ideals, which are designated as the conventional values of the Russian Federation. Notably, gay propaganda is identified as a set of values that detrimentally affects Russian society. The actions of terrorists, along with the United States and other adversarial nations and transnational corporations, pose a threat to Russia's traditional values. An objective of the state policy in this realm is to construct an image of Russia as a nation dedicated to upholding and safeguarding traditional universal values.
