Russian peacekeepers injured after vehicle hits mine in Karabakh

27 April 2021

A vehicle of Russian peacekeepers was hit by a mine in Nagorno-Karabakh, with two servicemen injured, Sputnik Armenia news agency reported on Tuesday.

The incident took place on 25 April. ‘A truck transporting Russian servicemen hit an anti-tank mine in Karabakh. Two Russian servicemen were wounded as a result of the explosion’, the report said.

Hunan Tadevosyan, spokesman for the Karabakh State Service of Emergency Situations, told the news agency that the search for the remains of those killed in Karabakh, which was due to take place in the Fizuli area, had been halted because of the wounding of the peacekeepers.

According to the Armenpress state news agency, the wounded servicemen are in a medical center and their lives are not in danger.

At the end of September 2020, fighting resumed in Nagorno-Karabakh, a continuation of the long-standing conflict that resulted in civilian casualties. The parties undertook several attempts to conclude a ceasefire, but only a trilateral agreement reached on the night of 10 November turned out to be successful. Mediated by Moscow, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a complete ceasefire and to an exchange of prisoners and dead bodies. Yerevan also handed over the Kelbajar, Lachin and Agdam districts to Baku. In addition, Russian peacekeepers are stationed in the region.
