Russia calls on Sudanese parties to avoid actions leading to confrontation and hopes that the situation in the country will soon return to constitutional framework, Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, said on Thursday.
"Russia is closely monitoring developments in Sudan and stresses the need to avoid escalation. Russia interacted constructively on the UN Security Council statement," Polyanskiy said in a Twitter post. - "We disagreed with the interpretation of recent events as a coup and called on partners in the Security Council to take a concerted approach to events in Sudan, in other parts of the world and not to apply double standards."
According to the diplomat, the events in the African country were the result of a systematic crisis "due to the inability of the authorities to solve numerous problems and attempts to introduce solutions from the outside." "We call on all Sudanese parties to adhere to the national interest, exercise restraint and responsibility, and avoid calls or actions that could lead to confrontation. We hope that the situation in Sudan will soon return to a constitutional framework," Polyanskiy said.
The UN Security Council, in a statement on Thursday, called on Sudan's military authorities to restore a civilian transitional government by starting a dialogue without preconditions.
