Russian Permanent Representative called the negotiations in Vienna on Iran nuclear deal constructive

09 December 2021

A meeting of the Joint Commission of Iran and the "five" international mediators (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) on the restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program ended in Vienna. It was constructive, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, said on Thursday.

"The meeting of the Joint Commission is over. It was quite short and constructive. The participants noted a number of important commonalities in positions, including the need for a successful and rapid conclusion of the Vienna talks on the restoration of the JCPOA," Ulyanov said on Twitter.

The meeting was preceded by informal consultations between the Iranian delegation and the Russian and Chinese delegations, as well as with EU Coordinator Enrique Mora, who ensures Iran's indirect talks with the United States.

The seventh round of talks on the Iranian nuclear deal and the lifting of US sanctions began November 29 and was suspended December 3 when European participants returned to their countries for additional consultations before continuing the dialogue. During the Vienna talks, Tehran presented the parties with a draft agreement to reopen the nuclear deal in the form of two documents dealing with the lifting of US sanctions and issues on the atomic program. The US delegation does not participate in direct talks with Iran or in meetings of the Joint Commission, but is present in Vienna for separate consultations with the other parties to the Iranian nuclear agreement.
