Russian Permanent Representative to Vienna: Iran nuclear deal will be restored in the second half of November.

18 October 2022

The process of restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program will be over soon after the midterm elections to the US Congress scheduled for November 8, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, said on Tuesday.

"In my humble opinion, the goal of restoring the JCPOA will be achieved in the second half of November. There is no excuse for derailing the nuclear deal," the diplomat wrote on Twitter.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear developments by the permanent "five" of the UN Security Council and Germany. Previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US President Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.

The US midterm elections will be held on November 8. All 435 members of the House of Representatives and 34 senators will be elected.
